Pantalone Pantalone is a typical Venetian character, an old but lively merchant, often rich and respected, who is at times completely in ruin, but always full of life and ready to energetically resolve other people’s economic problems! He appeared often in the commedia dell’arte of Carlo Goldoni. The name Pantalone is thought to have derived from "Pianta leoni", when Venetian merchants "planted" a flag with a lion, the symbol of Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice.
